Risk management underpins life in schools. From ensuring pupils, staff and visitors are kept safe as they go about their daily activities, to informing strategic decision-making aimed at mitigating financial and operational threats to the school (and everything in between), the value of effective risk management cannot be overstated. In this issue we explore the many facets of risk management in greater depth, from cybercrime (page 12), how to audit the school’s finances (page 15) and future proofing your school (page 21). We also look at what it takes to ensure your minibus operations are fully compliant (page 26), your school’s estate has safe asbestos management in place (page 28) and your whistleblowing procedures are fit for purpose (page 31). On page 8 you’ll find an introductory article from the recently launched Independent Schools’ Mutual. The launch followed extensive background feasibility work involving a group of member bursars, guided by leaders in the field of mutual management. The Mutual has been created to provide an alternative to the conventional insurance market you will be familiar with. All ISBA members will be able to apply for membership of the Mutual. Visiting music teachers (VMTs) have come under the spotlight this year due to a number of gig economy cases which have raised questions as to whether a VMT is a ‘worker’ i.e. neither an employee or self-employed. This can be a tricky area for schools so make sure you read our in-depth article on page 37. Finally, it was a pleasure to see so many of you at our annual conference in Manchester and thank you for all your feedback following the event. To get a flavour of the conference see our highlights beginning on page 44 where we summarise some of the take-away tips from the key sessions. I hope you enjoy reading this issue.
