Summer 2020 www.theisba.org.uk 6 News Ballard School pupils spread musical joy While sticking to social distancing restrictions, pupils at Ballard School delighted their neighbours with outdoor musical performances during the COVID-19 lockdown. Millie Sandford, in Year 11, set up a microphone and speaker in her front garden to serenade her neighbours – some of whom pulled garden furniture into their driveways to sit and listen. Year 7 pupil, Ben Clark, played his trumpet three times a week along with other children in his street and played ‘Happy Birthday’ for Colonel Tom on his 100th birthday. Andrew McCleave, head at Ballard School, said: “We haven’t been able to spend time with our friends and neighbours as we normally would, but we can still connect with them, and music is a wonderful way of doing that. I applaud our pupils’ generosity of spirit as well as their excellent performances and look forward to seeing them all back on the school stage as soon as is safely possible". PPE face shields donated to frontline workers by King’s Ely King’s Ely made and donated PPE face shields to frontline and key workers in their region. They were all made by Patrick Carberry, head of design and technology, who said: “It has been extremely rewarding and a huge privilege to be able to make these face shields. I feel this is just a small gesture for our medical and care services, who are all doing a wonderful job in the local community". Recipients so far include local pharmacies and GP surgeries, nursing homes and care providers, as well as frontline staff at Ely’s Princess of Wales Hospital and Hinchingbrooke Hospital in Huntingdon. Caroline Walker, chief executive at North West Anglia NHS Foundation Trust, said: “I would like to say thank you to King’s Ely and Patrick Carberry for the donation of face visors to Hinchingbrooke Hospital. It means a lot to our staff and knowing they have all this support from our local community keeps them going while they care for our patients and each other in such unprecedented times".
