Bursars Review | Autumn 2017 | Sample

@the_isba Autumn 2017 3 Editorial Welcome to the Bursar’s Review... As a result, it has been the ISBA’s intention throughout this year to sort the wheat from the chaff and take you through this process step by step. A number of revised template documents have already been published in the ISBA’s reference library and, if you haven’t done so already, I would strongly recommend you begin to audit the data your school holds (a reminder that the ISBA’s template grid to get you started can be found in the library at: https://members. theisba.org.uk/52108 ) . You will also find a continuation of our series of articles on the GDPR in this issue, beginning with Farrer & Co’s Owen O’Rorke examining how schools can best put GDPR policy into practice on page 8. On page 14 Toks Oladuti, director of information systems at Francis Holland Schools Trust and the Trust’s data protection officer, talks us through how he instigated an organisation-wide compliance programme and the challenges he faced. His tips on how to put a GDPR compliance strategy together are well worth a read. Mark Orchison, managing director of 9ine Consulting, explains that school websites and other web facing school systems can be easy and available platforms for cyber security breaches and offers advice on how you can make your school more secure on page 16. Political, as well as legislative, winds of change continue to blow for the sector too and on page 28 Paul Giness of The Beattie Partnership explores the implications of the Scottish Government’s publication of Kenneth Barclay’s report into non-domestic tax rates. My thanks go to John Edward, director at the Scottish Council of Independent Schools (SCIS), for his update on this subject on page 30. Finally, as a reminder that change can often be positive, I was delighted to attend the ISC’s recent launch of their new publication ‘Celebrating Partnerships’ which highlights the many examples of successful links between state and independent schools. Justine Greening also attended the event and spoke in warm terms about how much the independent sector is already doing to support the Government’s drive in this area. This followed on from her comments earlier this summer on the recent Green Paper that “the Government has welcomed the way that our independent schools have actively considered and proposed what more they could do to raise attainment in state schools, in recognition of their responsibility to their own local communities. Over this Parliament, we intend to build on the positive and constructive conversations we have had with the sector to agree how they could do more to improve attainment for children from all backgrounds, and increase the number of good school places.” I look forward to continuing to work with the ISC to support the building of the sector’s relationship with Government and, just as importantly, with you all this term as you strive to make your schools the best they can possibly be. As the range of subjects covered at the ISBA’s annual conference demonstrated, our sector is not short of issues that manifest themselves frequently in our individual in trays − but with membership of the ISBA, you can rely on the support and professional network you need to tackle these head on. …from the ISBA’s chief executive, David Woodgate. As we head towards the mid-point of the autumn term, I hope this issue finds you feeling on top of your ‘to do’ list. There’s no doubt that there is change in the works this academic year, not least with the impending arrival of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). It can be argued that much of the information that exists on the GDPR has been rather vague and, in fact, somewhat alarmist, offering little practical guidance for schools.
