Bursars Review | Spring 2018 | Sample

@the_isba Spring 2018 3 Editorial Welcome to the Bursar’s Review... It has certainly concentrated our efforts here at the ISBA where we have been running a number of training events on the subject − if you missed our new Data Protection and Cyber Security conference held in October all the sessions can now be viewed on ISBA TV here: https://members. theisba.org.uk/member-tools/isba-tv.aspx We have produced a wealth of guidance materials on GDPR – from template documents you can download and use, to detailed briefing notes and summary articles. You will have also seen, and hopefully found useful, the last two articles in the summer and autumn 2017 issues of the Bursar’s Review. This current issue sees the culmination of our series on GDPR, on page 9, where Owen O’Rorke at Farrer & Co (who has written much of the ISBA’s reference library materials) brings us up-to-date with the latest on the ICO’s guidance for schools and the UK-only Data Protection Bill, and helpfully points out some important considerations to bear in mind as we move towards May and beyond. On page 14, we revisit the three schools we featured in the summer issue – Manchester Grammar, Oundle and Winchester College – to get an update on their journey to GDPR compliance. The message we can all take home is that a calm and measured approach is imperative but that it is certainly wise to evidence your efforts at every stage. Schools are bastions of excellence in many areas, and from our conversations with members, we are certain their work to meet the demands of GDPR will be no different. However, there is no escaping the particular intricacies of this Regulation and I would urge you to make use of the advice available to you in the ISBA’s reference library. This term we will also be holding regional group GDPR training seminars around the country – with all the dates on the ISBA website – where we will be able to discuss with you any particular issues your school is facing. We look forward to seeing you at the meetings. Last but certainly not least, the second part of our minibus safety campaign features in this issue on page 77, where Chris Maynard, CEO of Castle Minibus, discusses the changes we are likely to see in 2018 in minibus licencing. This year will see us produce detailed practical guidance to help you manage your minibus operations and member feedback ahead of this would be welcome. Please email John Murphie, the ISBA’s chief operating officer, with your thoughts to: john@theisba.org.uk …from the ISBA’s chief executive, David Woodgate. With the spring term now well underway, I would hazard a guess that life has not got any quieter for you in your school. The impending GDPR deadline date (25 th May) is marching towards us at a steady pace and is likely to have been the focus of your attention over the last six months, if not the last year.
