Royal Mint Director, Dr Kevin Clancy concludes his two-part guide to the iconic 1818 Crown; Dr Adrian Marsden begins a new series on identifying medieval forgeries, and Richard Kelleher examines another rarity from the Fitzwilliam Museum. The Royal Australian Mint have released three coins to celebrate Australia’s Olympic and Paralympic teams as they get set for the Tokyo Olympics, now planned for 2021. The Covid-19 pandemic has affected our lives in so many ways. The cancellation or postponement of events mean that some commemorative coins have been issued marking events that are no longer taking place. This hasn’t stopped the Royal Australian Mint who have recently revealed the dynamic designs of three Olympic and Paralympic coins, originally intended to celebrate the Australian athletes as they prepare for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Although the Olympic and Paralympic Games are now postponed until 2021, the coins still feature a ‘2020’ date. Coin Collector editor Matt Hill said: ‘The coins might not be particularly rare in terms of mintage, but the quirk of the different year for the coin and the actual event do make these coins more interesting and desirable. Another factor is the determination for the world to fully recover and for the Olympics to take place next year – what a celebration that could be – couple that with Australian patriotism and the coins could sell very quickly.’ The coins issued are as follows: A 2020 $1 Coloured Frosted Uncirculated Coin. The coin design shows a volleyball player poised to strike the ball. Mintage: Unlimited A 2020 50c Round Gold-Plated Uncirculated Coin that showcases the five new sports to feature at the 2021 Olympic Games: karate, sports climbing, surfing, skateboarding, and baseball/softball. Mintage: 20,000 A 2020 $1 Coloured Frosted Uncirculated Coin. The coin design features a wheelchair rugby player and includes the Paralympics Australia colour palette. Mintage: Unlimited Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) CEO, Matt Carroll, said: ‘The AOC is appreciative of the support of our partner the Royal Australian Mint. We are thrilled to see these special coins in the market right now to recognise the continued efforts of our athletes as they strive to keep their dreams of Tokyo alive. While the journey is now a little bit longer, our Australian athletes tell us they have Tokyo in their sights for 2021.’ AUSTRALIA’S 2020 COINS FOR 2021 OLYMPICS C OIN COLLECTOR ‘ RARE ÆTHELRED II MULE SELLS FOR £13,640!
