????????? www.painters-online.co.uk 58 October 2020 artist We are proud to present the work of some of our talented prizewinners in this year’s competition, organised in partnership with Patchings Art Centre and supported by our highly valued prize award sponsors p The Artist Purchase Prize & The Artist Exhibition Award Yael Maimon Louder Than Words, oil, 12 3 16in (30 3 40cm). Yael is an Israeli artist best known for her cat paintings. Her special bond with cats was created while volunteering for years at an animal rescue centre. She enjoys painting in a variety of media including oil, pastel, watercolour, acrylic and mixed media. She says: ‘This depicts one of my cats with its attentive, focused eyes, gazing at someone or something. I find the body language of cats highly inspiring. I love observing them, watching the ways they can subtly communicate emotions, desires or state of mind, without even making a sound, simply with body position and facial expression, specifically with their ears and eyes. The painting was done using one of my photos of my cat as a reference. The colour play of blue and ochre as well as the dramatic lighting enhance a sense of quietness and atmosphere.’ www.yaelmaimon.com q The British Contemporary Art & The Artist Exhibition Awards Craig Lee Trafalgar Square in the Rain, oil on linen panel, 13½ 3 17in (34 3 44cm). Craig tells us that this was painted with the palette knife and possibly a little brushwork and is one of several paintings of Trafalgar Square completed after visiting the Royal Institute of Oil Painters open exhibition last year, ‘where they had lots of marvellous London scenes. You may remember that London was their suggested theme for 2019, so you couldn’t help but come away inspired after seeing so many great pieces of artwork.’ www.painters-online.co.uk Open Art Competition artist 2020
