Modern Building Services

EDITOR’S COMMENT MODERN BUILDING SERVICES APRIL 2021 3 Battles are behind us now? A s I write this, I’d like to think that our battles are behind us now. It’s been reassuring that as an industry we’ve managed to ‘carry on’, albeit with many restrictions and new ways of working. Over and above Covid we’ve had Brexit and the government’s emission cutting strategy. How is this affecting your businesses? What changes have you had to make? Are we really better placed going forward? I’d be keen to hear from your thoughts - please email: julietl@warnersgroupco.uk Our focus this month is on piped services, pumps & water. Piped services are the arteries of a building, delivering heating, cooling and water. We’ll look at challenges in supply of heating and potable water, what was missing in Climate Action – is there a case for an 11 Point UK Strategy? Do we really understand backflow regulations and what they mean? An area needing a bit more focus, especially when it falls under the wellbeing category in recent times, is Lighting. How will we deliver human centric to the masses? We’ve an example of how lighting contributed to a fully connected university and why data is so important to smart lighting. Much of the ‘new ways of working’ I mentioned earlier is also dependent on how we use packaged plant. This issue touches on how using modern methods of construction benefits refurbs. It’s also important that to achieve this, the package has to be right. In line with the governments plans on the carbon and the corporate agenda - how can packaged HVAC equipment help reduce a building’s carbon footprint. As the world opens up, so do the opportunities for more face-to-face visits, events and even awards dinners. Networking and building relationships are as vital in this industry as is offering the right product, right price and best customer service. The National ACR & Heat Pump Awards, of whichMBS are a sponsor, are still on track to hold their well sought-after awards dinner inManchester on the 20th of October. The CSA Awards Ceremony, also forced to move from June 2020, are looking forward to welcoming you all on the 11th of November at the Guoman Tower Hotel, London. The ECA Industry Awards are being held on the 22nd October, London Hilton Bankside and I’mvery proud to have been invited to join the judging panel. Entries are now open until the 23rd of July. Please do get in touch with any stories on how your business is moving forward after the effects of COVID-19. Particularly, any positive moves you may have implemented for this brave new world.
