David Woodgate Chief executive As we approach the second month of the new academic year, our member schools are continuing to deal with a variety of operational challenges. From the ongoing demands of managing a school in the midst of a pandemic to understanding the implications of the recently updated Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE) statutory guidance and the Teachers’ Pension Scheme, there is much to keep bursars and support staff at their desks long after the school bell has sounded for the day. In the Bursar’s Review we provide the detailed guidance you need on all the latest issues but in a concise and accessible format. On page 10, Kristine Scott of Harrison Clark Rickerbys outlines the revisions to KCSIE and explains what your school needs to do as a result (don’t forget we have updated the template policies in ISBA’s reference library to help you revise your own school documentation). On page 20, John Davies at Farrer & Co explores the issue of parental responsibility in the context of potential COVID-19 vaccinations for pupils while David Collington of Barnett Waddingham posits that pension change is actually a good opportunity to re-think remuneration (page 60). As the climate crisis intensifies and, after the heat domes, wildfires and flooding we have seen this summer, it is becoming increasingly clear that the move to a low carbon world must be expedited. Our second sustainability supplement is included with this issue, providing practical tips and advice on the steps your school can take to decarbonise your estate. Our thanks go to Ian Callender, chief operating officer at North London Collegiate School, and his team who share their school’s journey to becoming nominated for London’s Sustainable School of the Year Award (see page 12 of the supplement). We’ll be exploring sustainability further in two breakout sessions at our annual conference on 22-24 November 2021 at the ICC in Wales along with keynotes from an exciting array of speakers including Rt Hon David Lammy MP, Shadow Lord Chancellor and Shadow Secretary of State for Justice, the Rt Hon Baroness Nicky Morgan, Member of House of Lords, Baroness Floella Benjamin, DBE, and Dr Jonnie Penn, FRSA, author, technologist, activist and public speaker, amongst many others. If you haven’t booked your place yet, now is the time! Until then, may I wish you a happy and productive start to the new academic year. David Woodgate Chief executive, ISBA
