OCTOBER 2020 17 LP Open „ Daler-Rowney Pastel Award Clive Kind Plantations near Blaize Bailey, Forest of Dean , acrylic, 10 x 12½in. (25 x 32cm). ‘I always try to remember to take a small sketchbook or pad with me when walking the local footpaths and Forestry Commision tracks so that I can scribble a few notes about features of the landscape or quickly draw a view that I think could make a good subject for a sketch or painting later. For this painting, my eye was drawn to the contrasting form and colours of the deciduous (mainly beech, I think) and conifer plantations on a nearby hillside. I decided that this would be a good focal point, however, I thought that the overall composition also needed something to link and lead the eye from the foreground to the woodland so I modified the position and increased emphasis on a footpath winding its way through the undergrowth. For the painting itself, I used a limited palette of colours, as I enjoy the process of mixing my own tints and shades. This also helps lighten the load when I’m painting outside. Colours included titanium white, alizarin crimson, ultramarine blue, lemon yellow, yellow ochre and burnt sienna (all from Winsor & Newton).’ ƒ Search Press Awards Alison Yarrow The Drummer , oil, 23¾ x 19¾in. (60 x 50cm). Alison has been painting in oils, watercolour and pastels in her small studio at home for pleasure and relaxation for several years to offset a stressful job in child protection. ‘Portraits are my favourite subjects, particularly where the faces are illuminated interestingly, and this one had it all: great lighting, an interesting profile and wonderful hair! The light reflected from the red drum onto the hands was an added bonus as a foil to the black clothing. Unusually, the eyes are not visible but I’d like to think there is a feeling of thoughtfulness in the pose.’ „ Search Press Awards Darragh Treacy Trad Fest 2020, Palace Bar Dublin , oil, 17 x 19¾in. (43 x 50cm). Darragh is from Co. Wicklow, Ireland and it was his father, the artist Liam Treacy, that first introduced him to painting en plein air , which he continues to do as well as producing studio paintings. His subject matter is varied and includes still life, landscapes and street scenes. Darragh has exhibited at the Wexford Opera Festival since 2011. He is a member of the Dublin Painting and Sketching Club, recently being elected president of the 145-year-old society, exhibiting at its annual exhibitions and W.B Yeats anniversary exhibition in City Assembly House Dublin. Darragh also works as a set designer and his work has brought him much critical acclaim and numerous design awards. ‘This was painted pre Covid-19. I arrived at The Palace Bar, an old and great Dublin pub, to meet friends in what transpired to be the last night of the Irish traditional music festival, Trad Fest. A group of musicians were finishing off the festival by getting together in The Palace Bar for a session and I was lucky enough to be there to enjoy this amazing experience. Little did we know that the pubs would all be closed shortly after this and that the music would stop. I took photos and painted this in my studio. The painting was produced over a couple of days.’ TALP OPEN 2020 AWARDS Leisure Painter Category Sincere thanks to all our sponsors £600 Batsford Awards Four prizes of Batsford art books to the value of £150 each www.pavilionbooks.com/batsford £250 Caran d’Ache/Jakar Award One prize of £250 worth of art materials www.jakar.co.uk £250 Clairefontaine Award One prize of £250 worth of art products selected from the Clairefontaine Graphic & Fine Art range www.clairefontaine.com £500 Colart/Winsor & Newton Awards Two prizes of £250 worth of Colart art materials www.colart.com    £260 Daler-Rowney Awards One prize of £100 worth of acrylics, one prize of £80 worth of sketching materials and one prize of £80 worth of pastels www.daler-rowney.com £250 Great Art Award One prize of £250 worth of art materials from the UK’s largest art materials’ supplier www.greatart.co.uk £2,600 Leisure Painter Award One prize of a showcase feature on a selected artist in Leisure Painter magazine www.painters-online.co.uk £450 Patchings Award A gift voucher worth £450 to be used at Patchings Art Centre in Nottinghamshire www.patchingsartcentre.co.uk £175 ProArte Award One prize of brushes to the value of £175 www.proarte.co.uk £200 Royal Talens Award One prize of £200 worth of art materials www.royaltalens.com £400 St Cuthberts Mill Awards Two prizes of £200 worth of watercolour paper www.stcuthbertsmill.com £500 Search Press Awards Four prizes of £125 worth of art books    www.searchpress.com £400 Winston Oh Award A painting course up to £400 of your choice, provided by Winston Oh www.winstonoh.com Leisure Painter Highly Commended Award of a subscription worth £100 www.painters-online.co.uk (All art materials prizes are quoted at the rrp) Competition 2020 LP10 12-17 TALP_f.indd 17 19/08/2020 15:18
