We have been living under unpredictable conditions for a year now and even the strongest person must have wobbled from time to time. Worries about the world and the pandemic, our businesses and employees, money and family, are almost bound to have a detrimental affect on our mental health and wellbeing. To acknowledge this in ourselves is a tentative first step to strength and improvement and we hope the article on page 26 will offer some advice on how to support each other. There’s some very necessary reading in this issue. The ramifications of the Brexit deal are woven into several articles, as you would expect (and need) but the finance article on page 10 is another one you shouldn’t miss – it’s about IR35 and it emphasises the importance of preparing for one of the biggest tax changes in a generation. If you thought you knew how to put on a face mask (and take it off again) the H&S article on page 22 will probably make you realise you’ve been doing it all wrong for the past year. The article covers masks we wear every day as well as respiratory protective equipment required for a particular task at work. On page 20, Greg Mansell, Head of UK Research and Insight at Cushman &Wakefield, encourages business owners to “look to the future with humility and an open mind”. He predicts how the economy will perform this year, what investors will be honing in on and when he thinks the office market will start to show strong recovery. Fourth generation builder in her family, the remarkable Sophie Newcombe is a Senior Design Manager at ISG plc. She recently won the ‘Best Young Woman in Construction Award 2020’ and we have great pleasure in publishing her profile on page 16. We hope you make the most of this issue and take the advice we offer to help you survive and thrive in continuing challenging times. Never forget that FIS is always here to support you. www.thefis.org
